At the beginning of the year pattern sentences are a great way to give students the form of sentences, but also gives them the control and freedom over the content.
An activity that demonstrates the versatility of pattern sentences is our Halloween sentences.
First we come up with our sentence frame:
(Halloween Character) are (descriptive word).
Then we brainstorm descriptive words for different Halloween characters e.g. for bat - we came up with - black, scary, big, spooky for pumpkin - slimy, orange, smelly, round
Students can choose the character and descriptive word to write a sentence. They can draw a picture that matches the sentence. Several sentence strips can be stapled together to form a booklet. As the students finish their booklets they enjoy reading them to each other.
