Our routine of "Special Person" allows me to model and reinforce writing strategies.
Each week we have a "Special Person". The students interview the "Special Person" by asking a variety of questions. I record the answers on chart paper, modeling whatever writing strategies I would like the students to focus on. At the beginning of the year, more emphasis was places on finger spaces and beginning letter sounds. Now we look for capitals and periods, good describing words, and if the sentence makes sense.
